MA Degree Final Project
AN ADHERENT VIOLENCE IN DESIGN LANGUAGE
YEAR: 2021 | CATEGORIES: Interaction Design // Design Research // MA Final Project
For a long time, the exploitation of intuition was regarded as one of the most fundamental elements during the design process.
While the majority believes the origin of intuition is congenital and natural, this project argues that: as the very mechanism of the intuition is retrospectively constituted by the social and cultural structures, a latent yet adherent violence notion inevitably makes its presence in all design processes.
Deriving from structuralism philosophical, linguistics and philosophy of science theories, the project aims to support the argument of adherent violence from theoretical deduction, analysis of mechanism to experimental demonstration.
PART 1:
-- Is our intuition Nature or Nurture?
With this question in mind, a workshop is designed to consciously and actively force the generation process of a novel but random intuition, in which the randomness element plays the role of the violence of absurdity.

PART 2:
-- Breaking the paradigm pf switches
As switches used for light usually follow the paradigm of a binary/lineal input and output result, the aim of this experiment is to explore the possibility of avoiding the intuitions and creating new, reasonable connections between this pair.
In this experience, every two switches controlled one light bulb. For instance, a two-key push-button represented Numbers 0 and 1; the input binary result was transformed into a decimal number between 0-365 in real-time, which ultimately became the Colour Hue of one light bulb.
During the experience session (and during the degree exhibition), participants were told to interact with the devices as they'd like to without knowing the exact functionalities.
Observing the light output and real-time feedback graphic on the screen, most of them soon get to the "Eureka!" moment
